Research Scientist I
Dr. Jonathan Martinez is a Research Scientist I at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) stationed at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida. Jon specializes in tropical cyclone research through the synthesis of aircraft Doppler radar observations, in situ measurements, and numerical simulations. His research background focuses on understanding the dynamics of tropical cyclogenesis, rapid intensification, and lateral expansion. As a Research Scientist with CIRA, Jon primarily works on the Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program (HFIP) to develop and maintain research-based applications that provide guidance to forecasters and execute comprehensive model evaluations in support of NHC recommendations for operational implementation. Jon is further pursuing research with idealized aquaplanet simulations to better understand how the resolution of numerical weather models impacts their representation of the cyclogenesis process and associated implications for the frequency of tropical cyclone occurrences.
