Kevin Micke received his BS in Computer Information Systems from Colorado State University (2003). He began working for RAMMB and CIRA as a student hourly in May of 2002 as part of the RAMMB infrastructure team, where he helped support the software and hardware RAMMB uses to conduct its research. After being hired full time as a Research Associate I in April of 2004, Kevin’s primary role became web development for RAMMB’s various projects. He specializes in data-intensive web applications, database-driven web sites, and web server management to share his colleagues’ research over the web.

The most recent major site Kevin has built is SLIDER, short for “Satellite Loop Interactive Data Explorer in Real-time”, which is a web application allowing users to explore in real-time every pixel of multiple geostationary satellite imagery from around the world. SLIDER includes many helpful features such as pan and zoom, map and lat/lon toggling, configurable time step and/or number of images to view, and the ability to view imagery from a multi-week archive. Some of the advanced features include overlaying multiple image loops from different bands on top of one another, varying each loop’s transparency, and showing or hiding each loop from view. True to its name, there is also a “slider” feature that allows users to directly compare loops side-by-side by moving a slider control back and forth horizontally. Kevin works remotely from Austin, TX, after having moved there in 2024 to be close to family.
