By the numbers: weather forecast benefits to transportation

By Theresa Barosh | March 2025

Weather forecasts support transportation in the United States, enhancing decisions around safety. CIRA researchers pulled together some relevant numbers from past U.S. research:

Aviation

Flight delays cost airlines and passengers an average of $31 billion annually. More accurate forecasts improve scheduling and reduce ground time, with a potential estimated benefit between $102 million and $151 million annually.

Driving

In 2021, researchers estimated reductions in time spent on the road by drivers due to improved planning from enhanced traffic forecasts, as well as associated increases in labor productivity. Commuting delays are associated with decreases in labor productivity. Their estimate of annual value to drivers and employers was at least $57 million, likely more.

Weather information is considered a public good because it can be used by multiple people without being depleted. Currently, weather forecasts are free and available to everyone.
