The location, movement, and behavior of shortwaves is of interest to
the forecaster. Figure 1 shows 500 mb absolute vorticity as analyzed
by the ETA model at 12 UTC 11/21/97. The maximum which will be watched
by the eastern states over the next few days is evident in north Texas.
However, the next run of the ETA is twelve hours away.
Figure 2 is a GOES-8 water vapor image from 1145 UTC, which also shows
the shortwave. Using satellite data, the shortwave can be monitored
every 15 to 30 minutes as seen in the accompanying
loop. The ETA model image came from Purdue WXP. | ||
