Today's images are a preview of a product currently under development
for future use at AWIPS sites. This particular loop is a series of
minimum radiance images produced from the GOES-8, 10.7 micrometer
channel over the eastern half of the US. Each image was produced by
taking the radiance values at the given hour at a given location
during September 1997, and determining the minimum value. This series
is for every other hour except 0445 Z, which was during the satellite's
eclipse period. Red areas are regions of cold radiance values; white
are warmer radiances. The minimum radiance images highlight where there has been deep convection during September 1997. Most noticable are the areas in southern Texas, Florida, and off the southeastern US coast. These active areas may either be a single convective event, or a composite of several events.
