Brightness temperatures in degrees Celsius marked by periods along color bar
Today's images are a preview of a product currently under development for future use at AWIPS sites. This particular loop is a series of minimum radiance images produced from the GOES-8, 10.7 micrometer channel over the eastern half of the US. Each image was produced by taking the radiance values at the given hour at a given location during September 1997, and determining the minimum value. This series is for every other hour except 0445 Z, which was during the satellite's eclipse period. Red areas are regions of cold radiance values; white are warmer radiances.

The minimum radiance images highlight where there has been deep convection during September 1997. Most noticable are the areas in southern Texas, Florida, and off the southeastern US coast. These active areas may either be a single convective event, or a composite of several events. In addition, areas that were convectively quiet during the month can be seen, such as the New England area.
