. . . VISIBLE COMPOSITE

. . . A composite (averaged brightness values) of visible images from mid-morning to early afternoon highlights the persistence of the LES bands. Two secondary factors were present to further enhance this part of the event. First, a shoreline-parallel band (designated Type-IV in Niziol, et al., 1995) formed along the northern shore of the upper Michigan peninsula. Satellite imagery shows that clouds from this band converged with the mid-lake band affecting Y62. Secondly, topographic lift at the rather large peninsula (called Whitefish Point) to the northwest of Y62 may have enhanced the mid-lake band even further. Animated loops reveal persistent and relatively colder cloud tops downwind from that feature.
