Below are checklists of the following types of weather balloons and balloon-related devices on postal items (stamps, souvenir sheets, aerogrammes, postal cards, etc.). Catalog numbers, years of issue, and notes on the items featured are given when available. Equipment carried aloft with weather balloons: Weather balloons always carry with them an instrument package known as a radiosonde. Some balloons also have a parachute that allows the package to drift gently back to the surface after the balloon bursts. Some older systems also carried a boxy radar reflector that would efficiently reflect the energy from a tracking radar. As will be seen in the table of weather balloon stamps, different systems can have different combinations of these three attachments.
