Definitions of various names for tropical cyclones:

Hurricane: A tropical cyclonic storm having minimum winds of 74 miles per hour (64 knots). Hurricanes occur in the North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, or in the eastern North Pacific off the west coast of Mexico, and sometimes move into temperate latitudes. Variant names given to the same type of storm in other areas of the world include typhoon (western Pacific, eastern Asia), cyclone (Indian Ocean), willy willy (Australia), and baguio (China Sea).
Typhoon: The name for a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of 74 miles per hour (64 knots) or greater in the western North Pacific Ocean. This same tropical cyclone is known as a hurricane in the eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean, and as a cyclone in the Indian Ocean.
Tropical Cyclone: A general term for all cyclone circulations originating over tropical waters, or the more formal name for hurricanes (Atlantic and Eastern Pacific) or typhoons (Western Pacific and Indian Oceans).
"Cyclone" is sometimes used as a colloquial term for "tornado". See the tornado, waterspout, and dust devil page.
