Snow Measurements and Modeling: An Introduction to Glen Liston
Dr. Glen E. Liston
Tuesday, February 20, 2007 10:00 AM
CIRA South Conference Room
Dr. Liston joined CIRA in February of last year. This presentation will introduce him and his research. His professional focus has been the research and parameterization of snow and ice processes for local- regional- and global-scale land-atmosphere interaction models operating at climate, and shorter, time scales. In addition, he has been actively involved in snow and ice process studies in high-latitude and high-elevation environments. In 1982-83 he wintered over at the United States Amundsen-Scott South Pole Research Station, Antarctica, where he received a United States Congressional Service Medal. Since that time he has gained considerable experience in cold-regions field research, leading and participating in snow and glaciological research expeditions around the world. These projects involve multi-day, multi-week, and multi-month field programs. In recognition of his field research and related publications, in 1999 he was elected a Fellow of the Explorers Club.
This presentation will include a summary of some of the models he has developed and the associated field expeditions, in addition to a summary of two, multi-month International Polar Year (IPY: 2007-2009) expeditions he will participate in: one crosses the Canadian Arctic, and the other is an overland traverse to the South Pole.
