Predictions are for an uncertain and changing future climate. These predictions include an increased incidence of extreme weather including warmer temperatures, retreating glaciers, thawing permafrost, and pest infestations. Severity is likely to differ regionally: Increased future drought is predicted in some parts of the US (Seager and Vecchi 2010) and may include significant increase or decrease in rainfall quantity, timing, and intensity. These impacts are reported on in a recent report entitled, "Carbon Sequestration and Greenhouse GasFluxes in Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities" and will be discussed. National efforts by agricultural researchers to help address these issues are being pursued by ARS scientists and others in the GRACEnet program. Internationally, a project among over 30 countries is beginning to address how scientists can work together on collaborative projects that can decrease agricultural greenhouse gas emissions as part of a Global Research Alliance. The objective of this seminar will be to provide the audience information and discuss these activities.
