CIRA Support to the JPSS Proving Ground and Risk Reduction Program
CSU Project #: 5-31122Sponsor: NOAA
Primary Investigator: Dr. Steve Miller
Start Date: July 1st, 2012
End Date: June 30th, 2013
Objectives:
- • Develop database of AMSU MIRS temperature and moisture retrieval for global tropical cyclones.
- • Gather initial user feedback.
- • Conversion of DNB radiances to TOA reflectance and evaluation.
- • Consult with CIMSS on development of the spatial mapping between VIIRS DNB and M-bands.
- • Consult with CIMSS on adaptation of VIIRS nighttime cloud detection to accept visible reflectance input.
- • Coordinate with CIMSS to conduct preliminary demonstrations of cloud mask.
- • Develop database of VIIRS data for global tropical cyclones.
- • Begin development of center fixing routine from AMSU, VIIRS and GOES.
- • Begin development of ATMS intensity estimation algorithm.
- • Begin testing of maximum potential intensity estimate with MIRS retrievals for improved LGEM.
- • Begin investigation of NPP input into the RII.
- • Meet with GINA and initial suite of user groups, presenting background on VIIRS DNB capabilities and determining schedules and protocols for interaction, products, etc.
- • Develop automated processing scripts for basic DNB imagery production.
- • Conduct selected DNB nocturnal product demonstrations for user-defined Arctic parameters and regions of interest, leading into the first winter season intensive observation period.
