CIRA Support to the CASA Dallas Fort Worth Urban Demonstration Network
CSU Project #: 5-31281Sponsor: NOAA
Primary Investigator: Chandrasekaran Venkatachalam
Co-Investigator(s): Brenda Phillips
Start Date: April 1st, 2012
End Date: July 31st, 2013
Objectives:
- • Testing and integration of following products into AWIPS for 2012 storm season: Single radar velocity, single radar reflectivity, merged composite reflectivity; composite QPE.
- • Testing and integration of following CASA products into AWIPS2: Single radar velocity, single radar reflectivity, merged composite reflectivity; composite QPE; 3DVAR wind vector products; Real-time multi-Doppler wind vector products.
- • Integration /evaluation of CASA QPE products into FFMP (once AWIPS2 integration is complete) for analysis and use by FWD-WFO).
- • Develop and test products for targeted, fused observations (approx. 1-5 minute updates, 250m resolution) combining CASA with non-CASA lightning, radar, lidar, and/or satellite data for the development of severe weather intensification trend products (nowcasts and real time).
- • Development and testing of storm growth and decay detection algorithms, threshold algorithms for fused products above.
- • Development of meteorological metrics showing the accuracy of intensification products.
- • Development of user-relevant metrics for standard CASA products for DFW emergency managers, public works departments, and private hospital managers, and other users.
- • Development of user-relevant metrics for prototype CASA convective initiation and intensification products (targeted-fused observations, analysis and assimilation, NWP).
- • Develop and test methodology for forecaster/emergency observation in FWD-WFO forecast office, including survey methods, participant observation and success metrics.
