Downscaling NCEP Global Climate Forecast System (CFS) Seasonal Predictions for Hydrologic Applications Using Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS)
CSU Project #: 5-31113Sponsor: Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
Primary Investigator: Lixin Lu, Ph.D.
Start Date: July 1st, 2009
End Date: April 30th, 2013
Objectives:
- Improve our understanding and capability to use regional climate models dynamically downscale large-scale global atmospheric model output to regional scale, and to assess whether RCM seasonal predictions can surpass the skill of the operational GCM, and explore the methodology of dynamic downscaling in prediction mode.
- More specifically, we will use RAMS to dynamically downscale NCEP CFS from 100s-km grid increment to conterminous United States (CONUS) at 30-km grid increment. Our model output will be compared with observations, output from other selected models, as well as original GCM input data.
