Research Associate II (Satellite Data Analyst and Scientific Programmer) (13-105)

The Center for Geosciences and Atmospheric Research (CG/AR) and the CloudSat Data Processing Center (DPC), two groups within the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University, seek to hire a satellite data analyst and scientific programmer to support ongoing operations and research (office will be in Fort Collins, Colorado).  CG/AR has access to new global and regional data sets having many scientific and practical applications including but not limited to a new 22-year global water vapor data set and a new 10 year global aerosol data set.  The group seeks to hire an individual who can perform analysis, study, and publish new results using these data sets and other related information including global and regional model output.  The CloudSat DPC has been responsible for producing the official standard data products for NASA’s CloudSat satellite mission since 2006.  The spacecraft carries a 94 GHz cloud radar and the DPC uses these data along with additional satellite and model data sets in its processing stream.  The DPC is looking for similar capabilities in the manipulation and analysis of satellite data sets for its operational environment in support of the CloudSat Science Team and related projects.

Responsibilities:
The individual in this position will acquire the required data sets from local and remote providers and develop the software required to read, manipulate, and analyze them.  He/She will then use these results to produce publications.  He/She will also use the software and techniques acquired and developed in support of the CG/AR and CloudSat DPC project goals.  In addition, he/she will assist others with data acquisition and the use of developed tools and techniques.  Travel may be required.

Required Qualifications:
* Master’s degree in Atmospheric/Earth/Space Science or Bachelor’s degree in the same plus three or more years work experience.
* Demonstrated experience manipulating and analyzing large remote sensing scientific data sets.
* Demonstrated strong programming skills including the use of Fortran.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Skills:
* Experience with data formats including HDF, HDF-EOS, NetCDF, and GRIB.
* Windows and Linux experience.
* Familiarity with software development tools including Visual Studio and/or Eclipse.
* Experience with analysis/visualization tools (IDL, MATLAB, etc.)
* Programming with scripting languages (PHP, Perl, etc.)
* Experience with Database SQL
Other desirable skills include the ability to handle multiple tasks and ensure projects meet deadlines, to take initiative and work well in a team environment, and a willingness to grow professionally.
