Biography

Michael Hiatt received his BS in Electrical Engineering and Minor in Mathematics from Colorado State University in 1987. He has been part of the CIRA technical team since graduation starting as an entry level engineer. Today, he is CIRA’s infrastructure manager. His areas of interest include satellite earthstation technology, digital circuit design, large data set system design, processing, and archive, Windows-based infrastructures, and Microsoft .NET programming. Special accomplishments include first Xilinx FPGA frame synchronizer, DVD/BD archival system for large data sets, and first light from several NOAA GOES satellites. Michael also introduced the concept of mainstream technology for science applications at CIRA. Today, not only does CIRA benefit from this topology, the Cloudsat DPC has also leveraged this concept into a successful program. Michael has been recognized with CIRA's Researcher of the Year and Distinguished Administrative Professional awards.

Recent Work

Michael provides technical planning, management, and support for CIRA’s infrastructure. He also solely operates the satellite earthstation which currently collects GOES, MSG, and AVHRR data.

His recent special project is the hardware manager for the Cloudsat data processing center. This includes hardware and system planning, development, deployment, and maintenance. Using techniques developed in CIRA’s earthstation, Michael deployed a similar mainstream technology platform. Special considerations have been given to security and high speed networking. The earthstation DVD writing system was used and accepted by NASA/JPL as the Cloudsat archive medium. New NAS storage systems (14TB/unit) have been recently designed and deployed to increase Cloudsat’s storage systems.
