Biography

Hongli Jiang received her BSc (1982) and MS (1985) in Physics from Nankai University, in China. She received her Ph.D in Atmospheric Science in 1993 from New Mexico Tech. Her graduate research focused on the study of dynamics of the balanced aspects of mesoscale convective systems. From the summer of 1993 to 1994, she worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan to study the impact of the Great Lakes on the local climate using MM5. Between 1995 and 2005, she has worked as a Research Scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU). Since June of 2005, she is affiliated with NOAA/ESRL through the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at CSU. Her research has included mesoscale convective system parameterization to interface with GCM,  cloud-resolving simulations of tropical deep convective systems and Arctic stratus clouds, large-eddy simulation of tradewind cumulus convection in the marine boundary layer, aerosol-cloud-dynamical-radiation feedbacks in both the marine and continental boundary layers using the Regional Atmospheric Modeling Systems (RAMS), and statistical comparison of properties of simulated and observed warm cumulus clouds. Her expertise also includes in the developing a new methodology to better estimate soil moisture using Artificial Neural Network.
