Ensemble mean vs. ensemble mode

We would like to compare the ensemble mean with the ensemble mode strategies, consistently applied in both the analysis and the forecast steps. In particular, the following issues will be addressed:

1. If, and how much, ensemble size impacts the performance of the two approaches;
2. Assess the impact of model error adjustment in data assimilation on the ensemble forecasting
3. Pay special attention to the produced forecast uncertainty estimate; address the multi-modal PDF issue.
