RAMMT and CIRA Contribution to the GOES-11 Science
Test
Summary of the Science Test
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) will conduct a GOES-11 Science Test beginning June 30, 2000 and ending
on August 13, 2000. Two science test
periods, June 30 - July 14 and July 24 - August 13, have been specifically
integrated into the GOES-11 Post-Launch Test (PLT) schedule. The reason for the existence of two distinct
science periods is that the GOES-11 Image Navigation and Registration (INR)
start-up, system characterization, and performance optimization testing will be
ongoing from June 30 - July 23. GOES-11 INR specifications are expected to be
met by the start of the second period of the science test. The same is true for
the instrument calibration. Detailed information on the spatial and temporal
characteristics of the imager and sounder scans are discussed in Section 2.
Viable science testing should also be planned to be used during the time
interval in between the two specific science test periods (July 15 - July23).
Although there are some restrictions in calling up special scans during this
time period, it is expected that the satellite schedule employed during this
time will be very similar to the one used during the first science test period.
Organizations planning to participate in the GOES-11
science testing include the: National Environmental Satellite, Data, and
Information Service (NESDIS) Office of Research and Applications (ORA),
Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), the
Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), and the NESDIS
Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB). This
document will detail the specific research and scientific objective of
participants located at CIRA and with ORA's RAMMT unit located in Fort Collins,
Colorado.
