Recent weather across the Gulf coast allowed an unobstructed view of the surface and its properties. This discussion simply demonstrates some of the surface information, temperature in this case, that is often available from the longwave IR imagery. In the image below, several surface features are easily seen in this enhancement of the channel four imagery. Over the oceanic areas, one can clearly see the loop current and its warm eddy in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic. Note the warm and cold eddies along the edges of these features. Over land, several urban areas are indicated by their warmer surface temperatures. Most prominent of these are the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale and Houston Metro areas. John Knaff
