The so-called "monsoon flow" from the south was bringing moist mid- and upper-level air from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico up into Colorado. The below figure is the 6.7 um, GOES-9 water vapor image from around noon local time on the day of the flood. Reddish - brown areas are dry, bright gray areas moist. Small, multi-colored areas are clouds. Click here for a loop of mostly 6-hr interval water vapor from 1200 UTC on 24 July through 1200 UTC on 28 July 1997.
