Weather Summary
Lake effect cloudiness dominated the region yet again. The low to the north finally moved off the coast of Labrador, but it continued to pull cold winds over the relatively warm Lakes, producing lake effect clouds and leading to as much as a foot of snow over Northern Michigan.
Flight Summary
C3VP did fly over the CARE site and the nearby CloudSat overpass at around ~ 2:30 LT. There was a possibility for CLEX add-on flight time, but with nothing but lake effect clouds in the area, the decision was made to hold off for more CLEX-type clouds. Below is a MODIS IR image and CloudSat swath showing the targeted clouds and the satellites' overpass. More details of the C3VP flight will follow.

Satellite Images
Images are every 4 hours beginning at 0045 UTC.
GOES-12 IR courtesy of RAP @ UCAR
GOES-12 Visible (during daylight hours) and Near IR (night) albedo from CIRA.
GOES-12 IR (10.7 µm) brightness temperature from CIRA. The color scale begins at 0 °C with an increment of -10 °C between color changes.
GOES-12 experimental cloud phase from CIRA. Blue represents ice particles, red is liquid droplets above freezing and yellow represents supercooled liquid droplets. Gray areas are clear (no cloud) based on an IR cloud mask.
