Weather Summary

A small low tracked across southwestern Ontario during the day triggering moderate snow showers over CARE during the morning hours. Out ahead of the low was a band of mid- and upper level clouds that hung out over Ottawa for most of the day. The colder air on the back side of the low enhanced another round of snow showers downwind of the still open waters of Lake Huron later in the afternoon.

Flight Summary

This would normally be the 36 hour period containing the Trois-Riviers, QC afternoon overpass and the CARE overnight overpass tomorrow morning. C3VP decided to cancel both of them and fly a weather flight over CARE in the morning, just after sunrise. There were a few snow bands over CARE, but more importantly for us, a good mid-level cloud field was present en route. The aircraft sampled "the perfect CLEX cloud" on the way to CARE and snow producing clouds over CARE, which worked out for nearly all the scientific interests present.

GOES-12 Visible (during daylight hours) and Near IR (night) albedo from CIRA.

GOES-12 IR (10.7 µm) brightness temperature from CIRA. The color scale begins at 0 °C with an increment of -10 °C between color changes.

GOES-12 experimental cloud phase from CIRA. Blue represents ice particles, red is liquid droplets above freezing and yellow represents supercooled liquid droplets. Gray areas are clear (no cloud) based on an IR cloud mask.
